Wedding Madness

Our prayers go out to those in Alabama, Georgia, and elsewhere who have suffered so much devastation in the recent storms.  The scenes on the news are unbelievable!  Please know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of many.

I thought perhaps some of you might enjoy seeing the photos on this blog of past royal wedding dresses.  Perhaps you too are caught up in the "wedding fever".  If so, are you setting your clock so you can watch all the festivities live?

In honor of tomorrow's big wedding, why not create your own royal guest name!
Start with Lord or Lady.
Your first name is one of your grandparents' names.
Your surname is the name of your first pet, double-barreled with the name of the street you grew up on.
Post your new name here in the comments.

I'm Lady Evelyn (Eve-lyn) Jip of Westmoreland.  Tom is Lord Robert Duke of Leonie.

More goodies from Dee!

It's always a "dee-light" to hear from Dee L. of Canton, OhioDee's name may already be familiar to many of you because I've shown you some of her beautiful work in the past.  Dee is very talented not only with her stitching but also with her finishing.

Last week Dee sent me photos of her Mrs. Waddelow's Basket.  Also in the photos is Mrs. Waddelow's Huswif. You may remember seeing Dee's lovely huswif back on December 10, 2010.

Dee stitched her huswif, basket and other needlework accessories on 32-count Country Mocha linen from Zweigart using Brick thread from Weeks Dye Works.  Dee, I'm so "dee-lighted" to see what you have done with these designs.

Dee has also completed A Petit Sampling Etui, a collaboration project I designed with my friends Louise (Cherished Stitches), Pam and Susan (Praiseworthy Stitches), and Clara (The Stitching Parlor) a few years ago. We each designed designed a sampler, one for each of the four sides of the needlework etui. We also included designs for the top and bottom of the etui.
This view shows the samplers designed by Cherished Stitches and The Stitching Parlor.

This view show the sampler I designed and the one by Praiseworthy Stitches.

I think you can see how each side can be framed separately, if you'd like.

Now look inside Dee's etui.  Notice the pockets, threadrings, a pincushion, and more.
Dee chose to use the same blue dupioni silk to line her etui as Louise and I did on our models.  If you're not a "blue" person, perhaps you may want to chose another silk color.  Clara used a deep rose silk on her etui.  A pretty green is another suggestion.

Dee, who never has idle hands, is now working on Miss Trenner's Needlework Academy.  I'm looking forward to seeing photos of that project, aren't you?  Meanwhile, check out Dee's other WMN completed projects by typing her name in the search box on the left side bar of this blog page.

Thanks, Dee, for sharing these photos with us.  Seeing your beautiful needlework is so inspiring!

Wishing you Easter joy!

A couple of weeks ago our son and daughter-in-law asked us if we'd like to visit them and watch Garrett on Friday while they were at work. Now how could we say "no" to a face like this? Although I didn't let on to anyone, I was a bit apprehensive about taking care of a 7-month old for the entire day. After all, it had been 33 years since we had taken care of a 7-month old for the day. Garrett is such a good baby that my apprehension was soon laid to rest.

It rained all day so we were "stuck" inside, but we found plenty to do. Garrett was particulary fond of the talking dog we took him, his grandfather's cell phone, and playing on the floor. The weather was beautiful yesterday, so Tom and I took Garrett for a walk while his parents ran an errand. I don't know who enjoyed the spring time walk more--Garrett or us.
Right before we left to come home yesterday, I pulled an Easter basket off the kitchen counter to see what he would do with it.
It certainly is amazing how much our little one has changed since we last saw him in March.

It looks like we're in for a rainy Easter Sunday here in Cincinnati. With all the rain we've had this April those May flowers should be as tall as the rooftops.

I need to run and get ready for church. I hope you have a joyous Eastertide.

Chizue's lovely Mrs. Waddelow's Huswif all the way from Japan!

I'm always excited when I hear from Chizue because I know that she's probably sending me photos of some of her beautiful needlework.  Chizue, who is  from Japan, stitches (and finishes) so many wonderful projects.  Perhaps that is why her name may sound familiar to many of you.

A couple of months ago Chizue sent me photos of Mrs. Waddelow's Huswif.  I must apologize for the delay in posting them--they got buried in a mass of emails.  I'm sorry, Chizue.

Chizue stitched her huswif on 40-count  Lambswool linen using Sister Scarlet  Belle Soie thread from Crescent Colours--a very pretty color combination.  Chizue told me that she is now making a basket with a paper craft band.  I'm looking forward to seeing what she creates.
What a pretty button Chizue chose to keep her huswif closed!

Such pretty fabrics Chizue chose for the inside of her huswif!
(I also really like the fabric under her huswif.)
If you want to see more examples of Chizue's beautiful needlework, check out these earlier blog posts of her  Quaker Needlework Treasures, Remember Me Sewing Pocket, Quaker Hornbook, Quaker Patternbook,  My Needle's Worke Box,  Petit Carnet D'Ouvrages, Livre I and II, and Petit Sampling Etui.  WOW!!!  This is a truly marvelous array of needlework projects!

Thank you, Chizue, for sharing these photos of your beautiful work.  You are truly an inspiration to many of us.  I look forward to seeing your next needlework art.

A very special gift to celebrate Teresa's parents' 50th wedding anniversary

Teresa B. from Jacksonville, Florida recently stitched An Emblem of Love as a gift for her parents on their 50th wedding anniversary.

Teresa wrote,  I finished "An Emblem of Love" for mom and dad's 50th wedding anniversary. They both love it and were completely surprised. The first time they saw it was when we picked it up from the framers and then took it to our county fair for exhibit. I'm excited to say that it won a blue ribbon! (Mom thinks it should have gotten best in show but she's a little biased.) I stitched it over 2 threads on 36 ct. V. Lt Examplar from Lakeside using a single strand of Belle Soie in Eggplant for the purple and Florimell Silk Floss from Gloriana Threads in Old Gold also using one strand.

It was such a pleasure to stitch this project. It's my first Quaker and I just loved working the motifs, seeing the whole piece grow with each one completed. I did make a few changes that you might noticed. I took out one of the motifs to allow me to put the year they married in as well. Plus instead of just using one color I wanted to pay a little homage to this being for the "Golden" anniversary so I stitched some of the hearts in gold along with the years.

Thanks so much for such a wonderful pattern. Ellen I've loved so many of your pieces but I have to say that this one means more to me than all the others. I'm sure you understand why. The pictures don't do it justice, but they'll give you an idea of how it all turned out.

Look at the touches of gold on Teresa's frame and the gold thread she added when she stitched the hearts and her parents' wedding and anniversary years. Wow--just beautiful!

Teresa and I first met at one of Rae Iverson's A Stitchers' Gathering seminars. In fact, she was in the first class I ever taught. It didn't take long for us to both discover that we were both Florida State Seminoles. (I have to admit that Theresa graduated quite a few years after I did.) Teresa and I have been able to stay in touch through needlework seminars and emails and occasionally I see her when I'm down in Jacksonville visiting Tom's family.

Thanks, Teresa, for sharing photos of your beautiful work.  Your thread color choices and framing are wonderful!  I'm honored that you chose one of my designs to stitch for your parents on their very special anniversary. I know they were thrilled!  Hope to see you the next time we're down your way.

We have a winner!

Congratulations to Karen Hrabak who won the give-away on the WMN Facebook page for Miss Trenner's Needlework Academy boxes, chart, lining fabric, ruler, and waxer. Karen wrote,  My Favorite Things Stitching Basket is a favorite WMN design.  I love all the baskets, containers and needlebook type patterns! Lots of things to store my scissors and other stitching tools in!

Karen, please email me your snail mail address so I can send the boxes and other goodies on their way to you.

I have one more set of distressed boxes so in a couple of months, I'll be doing another give-away. This time it will be here on my blog.

Since I believe that every blog post needs at least one photo, I'm leaving you with a photo of the large floral motif on the Ann Rayner sampler. The colors are so cheerful, and I love those birds.

Batman is alive and well and living in Chicago!

I haven't done much stitching this weekend because on Friday Tom and I drove to Chicago to spend some time with Batman and his family.  (We got home at 1am this morning.  This was a very short trip indeed.)

I knew that we would be spending most of our time playing with Batman.  I had told our daughter that I would need to get some hints on what to do.  She assured me that wouldn't be necessary--Batman would tell us what to do.  And he certainly did!!
Batman dying Easter eggs with his grandfather
Batman and the fireman/doctor on the Batmobile

Yikes!  Batman has fallen off the Batmobile and must use his Bat Rope to get to safety!
Batman contemplating his next move

AT LAST some quiet time for Robin, Batman, and the fireman/doctor.  They, along with Batgirl and Superman, had been very busy fighting fires, riding in the Batmobile, and rescuing each other when they fell off the Batmobile and got injured.  Some of them even rode wooden horses for a bit.

Hmm--ready to play some more?

Seeing Blue with Faye

Faye R., who lives in North Carolina, stitched a lovely version of Quaker Sampling II.  She used 35-count Straw linen from Weeks Dye Works and Blue Lagoon Belle Soie  thread from Crescent Colours.  What a nice combination of colors!

Faye told me she especially  likes the floral motif in the photo on the right.  She also told me that she often pulls out a motif  from a design and makes something extra such as a scissors weight, needlebook, or other small needlework treasure.  I'm looking forward to seeing what she creates, aren't you?  I think the floral motif she likes would look wonderful on the front of a needlebook, don't you?

Faye wrote, I just love stitching up your beautifully crafted charts. They are always so easy to follow and your directions are very clear. I consider your chart packs to be one of the best layed out in the business..... Soon I hope to begin "Quaker Sampling III"...(it is sitting patiently in my basket....) And, who knows, perhaps I will buy "An Emblem of Love..." to do one day as well!

Thanks, Faye, for the photos of your needlework and your very kind words.  You have certainly warmed my heart.  We try very hard to create designs that you will enjoy and directions that will add to your pleasure.

A change of plans

After I started stitching Ann Rayner, I learned that a friend had stitched hers on 40-count with one ply of DMC. She told me that to blend thread colors she did the first leg in one color and the second leg in the other color. Hmm... why didn't I think of that? (Thanks, Pam.)

So I've changed my mind on using the 32-count linen for Ann. I decided that I didn't like the way the two plies of DMC looked, and I knew I'd soon get tired of all the railroading. I'm now using one ply of DMC on 36-count Pecan Butter from Lakeside Linens and where necessary am blending threads using the method Pam told me about.

Here is Ann as of this morning.  She certainly liked to use bright colors, didn't she? I can hardly wait to get to the house and people.
Don't know if you can tell in the next photo that all of the colors are the result of blending as described above.

Quite a few of you were taken with my idea for a thread card that easily identifies the threads for a particular project. I print mine on a color laser printer. If you use an ink jet printer and you are going to be putting your thread card in a bag with your linen, make sure that the ink won't run if the thread card should accidentally get wet. You certainly would be a very unhappy "camper" if that happened.

I love reading the comments in my blog. Thank you so much. I read every one, and if you have a question I try to answer. However, when I don't see your email address I can't respond. If you have a question, please make sure your email address is visible in your comment or email me directly.

The With My Needle Facebook page has reached 1000+ people. To celebrate this, I've decided to have a give-away on the Facebook page. I'll post the information there in a day or two. Don't worry if you're not on Facebook. Later I'll do another give-away here on the blog. If you are both a blog and Facebook reader, you double your chances of winning. Good luck!

I've been led astray! (AKA--I've been a bad girl!)

On Monday night I put the final stitches in on I Sigh Not For Beauty. What an enjoyable stitch this was! I hope to take “her” to Carol, my framer friend, later this week.
Thank you to all who wrote about my faux pas on using the wrong color for the over-one text. I think Terrie phrased it perfectly when she called it “serendipitous”. I think that is the only change I made to this design that was not done on purpose. As you might notice I made a few minor changes. I think that by now you know that I consider a chart the “jumping off” spot. Each needleworker takes a chart/design and makes it her (or his) own making whatever changes she (or he) wants.

We have a lot going on in our lives these days, and I’ve found myself unable to concentrate well enough to work on any new designs so I’ve been just stitching away on others’ designs. I’ve certainly found it a great stress reliever.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve certainly have my share of WIPs. Sometimes the threads get separated from the linen and chart. (Heavens knows how that happens!! LOL!!) Anyway, I’ve come up with my own way of clearly identifying which threads go with which project.
I simply print a color photo of the project on card stock and then punch a hole in the upper corner to insert a metal ring to hold my threads.  (The photo on my thread card looks much better in person that it does here.)   I didn’t think much about the idea until a couple of friends at my sampler guild stitch-in started carrying on over the idea. (Yes, Marsha G, you can have this thread card since I no longer need it.)

I decided that once I was through with I Sigh Not For Beauty, I should go through my mountain of WIPs and finish up a couple of those before starting anything new. How could I rationalize starting a new project?

I was very good yesterday morning, when I worked on Catherine Theron’s Examplar 3 which was an August class with The Queen City Sampler Guild. The class was in the midst of my back problems, but before I got to the point that I couldn’t sit up to stitch. Once I ended up on my back, my poor Examplar 3 went into my stitching basket. She resurfaced Tuesday morning, and here is my progress so far.
But alas, I have been led astray!! Knowing that I will likely be going to Florida to help out with my father I wanted a travel project that I could take with me and one that I could also work on my plane ride to England for the May classes. But what to choose???

After lots of searching, this is the sampler I chose. Do you have any idea who “she” is?

Perhaps this will help you.
Yes, the sampler I chose was Ann Rayner from Threads Through Time. I’ve decided to use the DMC threads that Nancy Sturgeon used on her model. Wow, aren’t they cheerful? Perfect for a springtime stitch!

My original plan was to use 36-count Pecan Butter linen from Lakeside Linens. By using 36-count linen I can be lazy and stitch with only one ply of thread—no railroading of my stitches. Then I started pulling out my threads. That is when I discovered in three spots the sampler uses a blend of two threads. As hard as I tried I could not figure a way around this because I like my antique reproductions to be as close as possible to the original samplers. That is when I decided on using 32-count toasted almond linen from Zweigart. Nancy’s model was stitched on 30-count linen, so my version will be only slightly smaller than hers.

Perhaps this linen size choice was also serendipitous because it will be much easier to work on the larger count when traveling. I’ve found that I don’t dislike railroading my stitches as much as I thought I would. Perhaps you’ll have to check back with in a week and see if I still feel the same way.

Remember how I was holding off on putting the last stitches on Elizabeth J. M. Mears until I went to Accomack County (Virginia) to see my aunt? Well, those plans have had to be put on hold not knowing if and when I’ll need to go to Florida to help my sister with Daddy. I think that either tonight or tomorrow I’ll go ahead and put in those final stitches so that I can take Elizabeth to Carol along with I Sigh Not For Beauty.

I’m hoping that things will soon calm down so that I can concentrate on some new designs. I have a couple of ideas in mind. Wish me luck.

OOPS!! I goofed!

I've found that I'm not very good with SALs. I do much better sticking to one project at a time so I've been dedicating my stitching time to I Sigh Not For Beauty from C Street Samplerworks. What a gorgeous sampler this is and so much fun to stitch!

I'm using 36-count Pecan Butter from Lakeside Linens and DMC thread. For the most part, I've stitched the piece as charted. DMC738 didn't show up very well on my linen so I've replaced it with other colors everywhere except on the sawtooth border. I've made a few other very minor changes. All that I have left to do are the satin stitches for the acorns, grass, and sawtooth border.
But OOPS!!! I really goofed.  I accidentally used DMC500 for the over one text instead of DMC3021.  Of course, there is NO way that I would ever rip out all of that over one.  Would you?  Besides I've decided I really like the way the verse stands out with the dark green thread. Now I'm debating if I should rip out and restitch the lower case alphabet (above the verse) also in DMC500 or leave it in as it now is with the DMC3021.
