Get Yourself to Saco!

Yesterday was a very good mail day!  Besides the newest issue of Sampler and Antique Needlework Quarterly, I received my copy of the sampler exhibit catalog from the Saco Museum in Saco, Maine.

Oh my goodness!  The catalog is incredible!  This 154 page catalog has lots and lots of very large color photos as well as lots of information about each piece.  At the beginning of the book, the author, Leslie Rounds, discusses the schools that were in Maine.

When I ordered my catalog last week I mentioned to Leslie that I was very disappointed that I wouldn't be able to make it to the exhibit which lasts for about a month longer.  Leslie was so kind to send me a few exhibit photos which she said I could share with you.  (Thanks, Leslie!)

You may have noticed the wonderful work table in the first two gallery photos. I love work tables and tried to enlarge the photo for a better view.  Unfortunately, the enlarged view isn't very clear, but I thought you might like to see it anyway.

Leslie also referred me to this video broadcast from a local tv station.

Seeing the exhibit catalog, the video, and Leslie's photos has made me want to see the exhibit even more, but alas that isn't going to happen.  Perhaps you might be lucky enough to make the trip to the museum.  I know my friends from the Mayflower Sampler Guild are planning a trip there this weekend, and I'm insanely jealous!  Hopefully they will tell me ALL about it.

I had hoped to also show you my progress on the Anne Maria Clarke sampler, but I've had a setback.  My last photo showed you the queen stitched border.  I'm now adding the flowers to the border.  I had stitched 5 of the 12 queen-stitched baskets only to discovered that the wrong  thread color was in my kit.  The directions gave the thread number as 3833 and listed the color as dark brown.  Since I had dark brown thread in my kit, I saw no reason to question it.  I mistakenly assumed that au ver a soie 3833 was dark brown. Alas no!  3833 is a dark beige!  The color description on the chart was wrong, but the number was right.   (I don't know the au ver a soie colors by number like I do DMC and Needlepoint Inc silk so I didn't suspect anything.) What got me wondering about this was looking at the chart photo and also photos on-line from others who have already stitched this beautiful sampler. I'm now in the process of ripping out all of the dark brown, but I'm concerned because I anchored the other basket threads onto the basket outline which was stitched in the dark brown.  Please wish me luck that I don't need to rip out all of the other queen stitches.  The baskets took quite a while to stitch the first time.  I can't even begin to imagine how long it will take me if I have to rip and then restitch then!  Anyway, the correct thread color is now in the mail to me.  Hopefully in another week or so I'll have a progress photo to show you.

Oh Ellen I feel for you. How disappointing. At least you caught it now and can be happier with the color. Once your sampler is done you will have another remarkable treasure. I ordered my catalog last night. I am going back to watch the video and look more at your photos. Thank you so much for sharing all the latest:)))) love Annette

Ellen, Thank you so much for posting the Saco photos, and the wonderful video! What a super exhibit! And your post reminded me to order the exhibit catalog. The Saco makes it so easy to order--just a couple of clicks and it's done!

How terrible that you have to unstitch so much on Anne Maria! You are so conscientious. Being a little on the lazy side, I probably would have just left it as it was and hoped nobody noticed. ;)

Peace & Love,
Fran

This exhibit looks amazing! Love that work table too. I guess I need to order the catalogue at least. Won't make it up there -- wish I could!

Hope the ripping on the baskets is working for you. Such a pain. :(

What an amazing exhibit. Thanks for sharing the photos. So sorry to hear about your need to rip! I am afraid to do the queen stitch even once much less doing it over!

Wouldn't it be wonderful to see the exhibit in person!

I feel for you, Ellen. Frogging queen stitches is not fun.

love the post and i am so glad you posted the video of Saco. i also wish i had known ahead of time so i could have gone. for one would not have ripped out all those queen stitches i would have left it as my mark on the sampler. good luck i know how frustrating it can be.

Thanks for sharing the photos. I have been to the museum but couldn't take photos as per their policy. The exhibit is just incredible and I didn't realize they had a catalog.
